Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art used to control a resisting opponent in ways that force him to submit. Controlling your opponent is generally easier on the ground than in a standing position, so much of the technique of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is centered round the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for dominant control.
Overcoming an opponent of greater size, strength and aggression with lesser size and strength is the unique aspect of the sport. This is done by utilizing superior leverage, grip and position upon your opponent. At the Renzo Gracie Latham Academy, students will gain a deep understanding of the workings and limits of the human body, while getting an insanely great work out.
BJJ Program Types
Our Kids Program offers both gi and no-gi classes. Our instructors teach BJJ techniques and self-defense in a fun, high-energy environment with an emphasis on physical fitness and discipline. The aim is to promote confidence and awareness in our children, while helping them develop gross motor skills.
Blue BeltAll levels (focus on fundamentals)
The goal of our Blue Belt Program is to provide the basic knowledge and framework for those new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and prepare our novice students for their blue belts. To achieve this, the Blue Belt classes focus on combining basic movements and imparting the primary aim of BJJ: gain an advantageous position, stabilize the position, and achieve a submission.
Purple BeltWhite belt, 3 stripes and up
This is where our students begin to put their own BJJ games together. Our instructors teach series of movements, and encourage students to experiment with the concepts of those movements to develop a more individual-style game. Purple Belt classes are invaluable to the development of our students to experience several different styles within the Academy, as well as have the opportunity to test their game against higher belts.
NOTE: White Belts students with 3 and 4 stripes enrolled in the Purple Belt Program MUST attend at least one Blue Belt class per week.
RandoriWhite belt, 1 stripes and up
Randori is a Japanese word that means “free-style practice;” there is no instruction during Randori. Students pair off for 3- to 5-minute rounds, and switch partners every round for the class duration.
This is a spectacular time to test your technique and work on all aspects of your game (for example, controlling your breathing, using skill instead of force, etc.) in the closest simulation to live-training that our classes can offer.
Randori should not be used as a competition class; it should be used to improve your game.
All-LevelsWhite belt, 1 stripes and up
These classes allow students of all levels to train together, building camaraderie and trust within our student population. The most important person on the mat is your training partner, and our mixed classes allow our students to train with every level of competency in order to improve their own games while at the same time becoming great training partners.

You’ll get in the best shape of your life without the risks involved with stepping in to the cage. Whether you are a total beginner, mother of four or an aspiring athlete, you will be pushed to bring out your best at a pace that will keep you striving forward.
